Charlotte works primarily in France, but has taken her camera on trips such as to Indonesia, where she took portraits of Mentawai tribespeople. She was inspired to use a Box Camera by Claude Simon and Mehdi Nédellec, and Simon helped her build one. “I immediately liked the idea of doing a lot with very little. It’s going back to basics, reclaiming space, time, matter. We remove the superfluous and return to the essential. The Box Camera is simple and efficient; it causes surprise and creates magic.” Charlotte built a small box and develops her direct positives in a separate box. “I like portraits. It’s the soul that passes through the lens and resonates like poetry.”
